Random Thoughts : Pinkie Apple Pie

Pie is good, I like pie, even pi.  Don't know how'd you make Apple Pie pink but here's a look at Pinkie Apple Pie!

Plot:
OH NO, We're caught in a motion blur!
While Twilight is studying genealogy, Pinkie Pie discovers that she is a distant relative to Applejack and the Apple family. While initially excited, Applejack is unsure of the record and everyone decides to view the record keeper of the Apple history, with the expectation of the Apple's being on their best behavior. However the trip goes off the rails fast.  First the cart is overloaded and breaks down, causing the family to build a boat out of the remains. Then the map is lost and they accidentally go through the cave of  1000 horrors (or the like) and then finally straight off a waterfall! Tired and deshelved, the group makes it to Golden Delicious's place and break down, believing that the Apple's had horrible behavior, but Pinkie disagrees and says that they are a great family for sticking together even in the rough times.  Goldy returns and looks through the records and can't determine if Pinkie is an Apple or not, but Applejack says she is anyways, no matter what the book says and the Apple family heads home.
What I liked:
"You smell that sweet apple air?"
"You farted, didn't you?"
"...No comment"
  • The Characters
    • Pinkie Pie and the Apple Family, an interesting choice but it works! Nice to see them interacting with another of the Mane 6, as most of the time it seems like they only matter when it's an Applejack episode and don't tend to interact with the rest of the cast as a family unit.  And then this is the first real episode where we get how the family works together and where they have their issues, at least in greater detail.  Pinkie Pie is top form here as well and gives a very outsider perceptive to all that's happening.
  • The Song
    • Just way too catchy! Probably my favorite of the entire show! Nice animation,(save for one spot) , nice melody, BIG MAC SINGING, and Applejack can play the banjo, wonder if her human counterpart can as well.
  • The Moral
    • That families can weather both the elements and each other and still love one another and be stronger because of it. A timeless message that hits home with everyone of all ages.
  • The Humor
    This just sums it up
    • Not as key as in other episodes but nice moments like the the picture up above or the reoccurring hawk and Pinkie's picture taking were great! Nice amount of levity to the episode!
What I didn't like:
Someone care to tell me how we have plastic life vests yet have no idea on how to make engines?
  • Overly Peppy Family
    • Okay so in the first act, the Apple act way to excited in my mind. Yes having a new relative can be nice, but they go way to overboard with this minor relational.  Doesn't last too long but still gets on me every time.
  • A Frame to Far
    • Why did Big Mac pack so much stuff for a trip that took them less than a day? Was the family portrait something that had to be taken along?
  • The Cheap Episode
    • So each season/episode has a budget and this was on the cheaper side. From the weird Pinkie animation during the song, to the rather simple backgrounds and the exterior shot of the cave, this episode didn't have the biggest budget. The money probably went to the Tirek battle scene in the finale.
  • Twilight said WHAT?
    • The line where Applejack says that Twilight told them to write down the story and lesson in the journal bothers me.  Why did we need to have Twilight say to do that? Kind of takes away from Applejack and Pinkie Pie's initiative and shoehorns in Twilight for no real reason.
???:
Ah think Ah'm havin' a stroke
  • Are you a boy or a girl?
    • Okay what is Goldie's gender? I mean he/she has a rather indeterminate voice and his/her color's are rather neutral. The only things that would indicate gender are the pink color Goldie wears and the cats Goldie owns, both of which indicate Goldie's female, but that's not very conclusive in my book.

Overall: Recommend
Flag of the Apple Clan!

Pinkie Pie and Applejack don't have enough interaction! We need more Earth pony goodness! That aside, this is a fun lighthearted slice of life episode that's a treat to watch!
